Location
Modoc is located in the northeast corner of California, not too far from the border with Nevada. This is a rural county dominated by a diverse natural landscape, including rolling hills, lakes and springs, pine forests, juniper flatlands and lava beds. As of the 2010 census, only 9,686 people live in Modoc, and the only incorporated town is Alturas. At just 2.25 people per square mile, this is one of the most sparsely populated counties in California.
A large percentage of the land in Modoc County is public land, including National Forests, National Parks and BLM land. There is thus plenty of outdoor recreational opportunities available, and some of the largest draws include Clear Lake National Wildlife Refuge, Lava Beds National Monument, Modoc National Forest, Shasta National Forest, Modoc National Wildlife Refuge, and Tule Lake National Wildlife Refuge. The county's slogans are 'The last best place' and 'Where the West still lives'.
