About Modoc County
Modoc is located in the northeast corner of California, not too far from the border with Nevada. This is a rural county dominated by a diverse natural landscape, including rolling hills, lakes and springs, pine forests, juniper flatlands and lava beds.
As of the 2010 census, only 9,686 people live in Modoc, and the only incorporated town is Alturas. At just 2.25 people per square mile, this is one of the most sparsely populated counties in California.

The county's slogans are "The last best place" and "Where the West still lives".
