During the Civil War, the War Between the States, Texas Longhorn cattle were driven north to the railroad, for sale in the East. After the great war ended, with the construction of the Transcontinental Railroad, yet more cattle were driven north. John Chisholm's name was later applied, as though one single trail, created by one single person, took all the cattle from all around Texas north through the Indian Territory that is today's Oklahoma, on to Kansas. because Missouri was off limits For Bowie, as a consequence of all the cattle drovers passing by, farmers and ranchers began gathering outside of town to meet them soon, residents joined in on the second Monday of every month for trading horses and mules. In 1890, this officially became a Tradin' Day, or Trades Day. Now, it has become an open-air flea market that covers 5 acres. Carter Lake, also called Lake Amon G. Carter, is a two-part man-made reservoir lake. It's serpentine, or shaped like a snake, with over 20 miles of shoreline surrounding about 3 square miles of water surface, and a maximum depth of 50 feet. The level of the lake is maintained at 920 feet of altitude. Water skiing, jet skis, para-sailing, they're all allowed, People have been doing a great job of sharing of the water for several decades without conflict. There are no policemen assigned to the lake, no park rangers, no state game wardens, none at all, not yet. It's quite amazing. Sharing the water's surface can be difficult on a crowded weekend, but the more basic rowing, rafting, sailing, and enthusiasts of the Exemplary Fishing use the smaller second portion of the lake. Skiers and the like, use the middle of the bigger lake. Swimmers and canoeists stay towards the shore. Other activities include camping at lakeside and picnicking. Bring your barbeque grill. Lake Amon Carter, it must be noted, is a reservoir. In times of drought the boating has, on a few occasions, been curtailed, or completely forbidden. Still, the lake generally provides an amazing variety of waterborne activities. There are jet ski rentals but no fishing boat rentals yet. As alluded to above, Lake Amon G. Carter is actually two lakes in one. Normal water clarity and water level fluctuation are both moderate. There is no significant aquatic vegetation present, even in the shallower, muddier, smaller second portion of the lake. Predominant fish species are channel catfish, largemouth bass, and crappie. The original lake was completely impounded by 1961, after the dam was built in 1956. It has a different habitat than the 500-Acre extension, created in 1985. The habitat of the old lake is characterized by the rocky shoreline, main lake points, cattail beds, and some standing timber in the upper end. The new portion of the lake is characterized by lots of standing timber and some weed beds along its shoreline. Both parts of the lake have stone riprap along their respective dams, providing excellent cover for some fish. The 20-foot tunnel that joins the two lakes also provides good cover for some fish and can be so romantic at night. The catfishing is great in June. Channel and Flathead Catfish can be found almost any time, just about anywhere in this rocky, larger portion of the lake. Two access ramps are available. Selma Park, off Texas 59, also has campsites. No camping is available at the Big Sandy Creek Access Area, off FM 1125, near Frontier Shores. Some details about the fishing at Amon Carter Lake Largemouth Bass is best caught during the fringe seasons, in the spring and fall not too hot, not too cold. To fish for the Largemouth Bass, remember how Amon G. Carter Lake is really two very different lakes side-by-side. The old side, the original smaller lake, stays moderately muddy and the fish stay shallow. Start with a pumpkin chartreuse tail worm and white/chartreuse spinner bait. Key on the rocky points and boat docks. The new side is normally clear with a lot of brush and timber. If you are looking for a big bite, stay in the new lake and drag a Carolina Rig with a June Bug, or Blue Fleck Worm. Catfishing is great in June, especially if there is some spring rain to make stream runoff. Channel Catfish like to feed in flowing streams or along windswept shorelines. Use live crawfish in these areas or try drift fishing chicken livers or blood bait across open flats near creek mouths. Channel and Flathead Catfish can be found almost any time, just about anywhere on this rocky lake. Flatheads like live bait such as bluegill or other sunfish, but Channel Catfish prefer punchbait. Crappie are best in the winter/spring when they school tightly for spawning. Jigs and minnows fished around standing timber is a sure bet. Many local anglers target crappie in the old lake which has lots of submerged brush piles, especially around boat houses. Jibs are best with stained water, but get you a bucket of minnows if the water turns muddy. White Bass are relative newcomers to this lake. They school at the surface chasing shad in the summer and early fall. Try trolling with a medium diving crankbait that mimics a shad. Sunfish, or Bream, are best caught during the summer when they congregate around brush, boathouses, or piers. A small hook that has a live baited flugenwumper, topped with a live earthworm, topped with a sizable cork is a surefire way to fill your creel to the brim, with bream. These are good eating, too. Some biography about Mr. Amon G. Carter Amon G. Carter, Sr. December 11, 1879 - June 23, 1955 was the creator and publisher of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram newspaper. He was a nationally known civic booster for Fort Worth, Texas, ever the classic cowboy Texan. He was a friend of the famous Will Rogers. Later, he was a Lyndon Johnson acquaintance and supporter. Amon Carter came to believe smaller Fort Worth was the underdog and better than the larger Dallas, next door. After his mother died in 1892, young Amon had moved away from his remaining family, to live in Bowie, Texas, where he supported himself with a variety of odd jobs. He found his calling working as a salesman, then went to Fort Worth to sell newspaper advertising space. In time, he became quite a Texas media mogul. Amon Carter helped to found Texas Tech University. To a lesser extent, he helped TCU Texas Christian University with donations.
